Teaser Tuesday! (6)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
"I had no idea which of the dwarfs it was, and come to think of it, I wasn't sure I could recall all of their names. There was, um... Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Boring-- no wait, Boring wasn't actually a dwarf. I was getting the dwarfs confused with my schoolteachers. "

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (6)

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from!

This weekend wasn't a good one. I was reminded of why I don't visit my grandpa often.
I haven't been able to do hardly any of the Harry Potter challenge. I haven't finished book 3, and I haven't watched the 2nd movie. I hope to get all this done tomorrow.

Book Review: The Swan Maiden

Doucette has always longed for the one thing she will never have. To be a swan maiden. Her 2 elder sisters are, but her mother insists that she wasn't meant to be one, and so is training her to take over the responsibilities of running a castle. Then Doucette discovers her parents secret. Doucette does have a swan skin, making her a swan maiden. With her new found swan skin, she flies over to join her sisters in training with Tante Mahalt, their sorceress of an aunt.

Upon returning home, she finds that the shepherd she has grown to love over the years is requesting her hand in marriage. In order for her parents to allow them to marry, he must pass 3 challenges. In order to win, he must depend on Doucette's powers.

I would've really loved this book if it hadn't been for Doucette's character. She was very selfish!
She doesn't think about why people are stopping her from doing whatever she wants. She thinks they're being selfish, when they're only trying to help her. She doesn't seem to listen to reason very well to the voice of reason.
I love Jaume, though. He was calm and smart and sweet and patient all these other thinks you want in a man. He was willing to do so much for Doucette, when she wouldn't do them for him.

The language was so beautiful and lyrical. I enjoyed reading it so much. The only part that I really didn't like about the lyrical language was the fact that I know I could never write like that. It's okay though. My writing style is different, and even if this language would fit really well on my stories, I wouldn't want it to. My writing has to have my voice and not someone elses.

This had a very interesting plot. There were points when I knew exactly what would happen, but then in the next chapter, everything would change! I didn't agree with most of Doucette's decisions, but they were her's to make, not mine.

(It would've been a 5 if it weren't for Doucette's selfishness! It's a horrible fault to have!)

Better than Potter Puppet Pals

So right after I did my post on the Potter Puppet Pals, I remembered this thing I found on the internet a few years ago when I was even more insane about Harry Potter than I am now!
I thought it was the most amazing thing since sliced bread!
Hogwarts Musical!
It's the whole story of the 2nd book set to the tune of all the High School Musical songs!
This is funny to go through and have a laugh, but if you know the HSM songs by heart (like I do) then it's 10 times funnier!
So go CLICK THIS right now! (You know you want too!)

Harry Potter Puppet Pals!

This video rocks!
I spent too much time trying to figure out what to do for a random Harry Potter post this week; so much time that now it's Friday.
Here is one of the most popular Harry Potter fan made videos ever!

Hopefully I'll have my movie thing up by Sunday, but don't be surprised if it isn't up until Tuesday because this weekend my grandparents are coming to visit, and my grandpa thinks that the Internet and Harry Potter are both of the devil, so I'm sure he wouldn't approve of both of them together!

Booking Through Thursday (4)

Do you ever feel like you’re in a reading rut? That you don’t read enough variety? That you need to branch out, spread your literary wings and explore other genres, flavors, styles?

I completely agree with that. I've trapped myself in the fantasy section, but I don't plan on pulling myself out any time soon. When the world runs out of fantasy to read, then I might consider branching out.
I will occasionally read some non-fantasy books. Usually contemporary or historical fiction, but I'm most comfortable in a fairy tale setting.

The discovery of her swan skin had changed her. Doucette could no more resume her old life than a chick could return to the egg.

(It bugs me so much that I'm reading the same book as last week!)

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Favorite Line
"Am I a professor? Goodness. I expect I was hopeless, was I?" - Gilderoy Lockhart
I love Lockhart! He’s my favorite character in the whole series! I love this quote because it shows that he’s much smarter after he’s lost his memory than before!

Favorite Scene
Something you should know about me is I LOVE back stories. I think they add so much depth to the characters.
I love when Harry visits Tom Riddles memory. You learn more about Tom, Hagrid, and Dumbleore.

Favorite Character
Gilderoy Lockhart!
He’s such a pompous dumbo! Every word out of his mouth shows how vain he is! I’m sure he’s a horrible person, but he’s such an enjoyable character to read!

Random Fact
The chapter picture for "The Rogue Bludger" shows Harry's left arm deboned, but in the story, his right arm has been deboned.

UPDATE: I've finally figured out some sort of schedule for the Harry Potter Challenge. It'll be posted by Wednesday!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (5)

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from!

Well, my redemption week didn't quite work out the way I planned, what with the Harry Potter themed brain wave I had on Tuesday.

Finished Reading:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Eclipse
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Currently Reading:
The Swan Maiden (so great, but I have no time to read!)

To Read:
My Fair Godmother
My Unfair Godmother

Special Posts last week:
Challenges, Challenges, and more CHALLENGES
Harry Potter Challenge
My Harry Potter Story
Book vs Movie: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Book vs Movie: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

I love the Sorcerers Stone so much! It's actually really hard to pick which one I like more because the movie is SO amazing. It's the book brought to life. This movie takes everything in the book and makes it better!
But there's something about a story when it's written down that's so magical. When you read a book, you can make your own interpretations of things you don't quite understand, but in a movie you don't have that choice because it was already made for you.

I love all the actors. They fit the bill perfectly. The actors are the only way I can imagine the characters.
This is too tough of a decision for me to make.

Book Review: Eclipse

***HERE IS MY VERY ACCURATE SUMMARY***
Bella is in love with Edward and wants to be a vampire.
Edward won’t do it until they’re married.
Bella goes to visit Jacob at least 5 times, each time with Jacob attempting to make out with her.
Edward gets mad when she comes back because he doesn’t like Jacob.
She loves them both and can’t make up her mind.
She ultimately chooses Edward because she wants to be a vampire.
Oh! and there’s a vampire named Victoria who still hasn’t been able to be caught.
Now she’s creating an army of newborn vampires to get Bella.

I don’t know what happened to Victoria because I zoned out during that part. That’s the good part of getting an audio book. You can unplug yourself during the stupid parts (which really means I zoned out of the whole book)!

This book was 98% Bella wants to make out with Edward and Jacob
2% Some kind of exciting stuff worth reading

It was poorly written. If it was written by nearly anyone else, it probably would’ve been better.
While I was listening to this, I kept thinking that Bella needs to go to a psychologist or something to take care of her problems. She doesn’t recognize her problems. She has fear of abandonment, fear of standing on her own 2 feet, fear of commitment, fear of someone trying to do the world good by getting rid of her forever, and so many other problems.

I’ve heard from several people that Twilight is like pornography. After reading this I completely agree. It’s addicting. I hate it, but it’s addicting. It focuses on sex quite a bit too much for my liking. Overall it’s gross and I don’t understand how people can enjoy such trash.

The only reason I read it was because 2 years ago I caught a quick case of Twilight Fever. It was very severe. I read the first 2 books, then committed myself to reading the others. Looking back I saw that I was crazy to enjoy it. I have changed my ways to ensure that I never catch Twilight Fever again!

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Favorite Line
It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live ~Albus Dumbledore, page 214

I’ve always liked this quote. I believe it’s completely true. As much as I love dreaming of the future, my life that I’m living right now is more important because if I only plan for the future and don’t live in the present, then when my future becomes the present, then all my planning won’t matter.

Favorite Chapter
Chapter Six: The journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

This is when Harry meets Ron & Hermione. I love the moment when they first meet each other. You can tell that they’ll be best friends for life.

Favorite Character
Hagrid

He’s such a kind person. He’s like a little kid, and a grandpa, and a favorite teacher, and an uncle, and a best friend all wrapped up in one 10 foot tall package.

Random Facts
Harry buys the book One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, but later in the book it says Harry looked up 'dittany' in One Hundred Magical Herbs and Fungi.

In the Spanish translations of the Harry Potter books, Neville Longbottom's toad, Trevor, has been translated as a turtle instead of a toad.

My Harry Potter Story

It started in 2003. My mom had heard about Harry Potter and thought it would just be a stupid book. She didn't care much for the idea of magic. Then her mom called. She kept talking about how amazing Harry Potter was. So my mom bought a used copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone at a thrift store for 99 cents. She started reading aloud a chapter a night. I know when she first started reading it, I was terrified to listen because I thought Harry would die in the first chapter, even though it's called The Boy Who Lived!
This is that copy today, 8 years later:
Soon after we finished reading the 1st book, my sister and I got strep throat. It wasn't pleasant, but Harry Potter and Jell-o got us through. It kept coming back, so we eventually had to get our tonsils removed. Recovery wasn't pleasant either. We'd sleep on the couch, eat jell-o on the couch, watch PBS Kids on the couch, and read Harry Potter on the couch. We went through the next 3 books very quickly. By this time we were addicted.
I remember that my dad went to Walmart at midnight to pick up the Order of the Phoenix. We went through that book so quickly. We hungered for more, but there wasn't more yet. So instead we listened to the audio books repeatedly. I have no idea how many times, I just know that I had them memorized.
Some time soon after that, my parents felt the need to upgrade to a DVD player. So we went to Walmart and bought a DVD player and the first 2 Harry Potter DVD's.
We watched the movies so many times. I loved them SO MUCH! I loved watching my favorite books come to life. Chamber of Secrets was always my favorite. The early scene where Dobby drops a pudding on Mrs. Mason's head scared me. I don't know why, I just know it took me 2 years before I could sit down and watch it.
Then my family's life got crazy. We had 4 kids. My dad decided to join the Army which meant moving around. We left our little house in Iowa to go live with our grandparents in Virginia while our dad was at boot camp. It was fun for a little while, but soon it grew less and less fun.
What made everything fun again was the Prisoner of Azkaban movie coming out. We went to see it at least 3 times.
Then about a year later the Half Blood Prince book came out. In Richmond there was a giant Harry Potter fest to celebrate the release. We went. It was so much fun. There was wizard chess, and chocolate frogs, and Ollivander's wands. The night of the release we stayed up until 3am reading the book. We finished it the next day. It was so much fun.
About a month after that, Jim Dale was going to be doing a book reading in Richmond. We went. He read some of the books. He also talked about where he had come up with all his voices. I got to go meet him and he signed our copy of the Half Blood Prince.
After that we moved to Europe and spent lots of time traveling. My mom, my sister, and I actually got to go to London. We stopped by King's Cross and found Platform 9 3/4.
Then on July 20th, 2007 we celebrated Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix coming to our theater. We were sadly dissapointed, but that was alright because the Deathly Hallows was coming out at midnight! The book store that was right next to the theater was having fun games all day. We bought 2 copies so we wouldn't have to fight with each other. Little did we know that my mom had already ordered 2 copies from Amazon. So now we have 4 copies. These are the 3 I could find:
The 3rd book is the deluxe edition. I LOVE the artwork! It is so beautiful!
So now, let's fast-forward to today! Last November I went to see the Deathly Hallows. IT WAS AMAZING! I'll be more detailed in my review later on.
And now I've invented this fun way to count down to the last movie.

So that is my Harry Potter story!
