Holly Webb’s Rose was absolutely wonderful, and its sequel is just the same. Rose and the Lost Princess picks up where the first one left off, with Rose exploring a newly discovered world of magic, and running into even more mystery and adventure. The pitch “Downton Abbey meets Harry Potter” is absolutely spot on, with the perfect mixture of magical adventures and historical drama.
I think I enjoyed the plot of this sequel even more than that of the first. Rose must assist in helping to find the lost princess, and in the process lots of obstacles cross her path. But Rose is a smart, resourceful, and dedicated person and works through it all. She’s an admirable character, and she’s such fun to read about. She still doesn’t know everything about her past, but she has a future ahead of her that involves apprenticing for Mr. Fountain.
All of the secondary characters are great. We get to meet several new characters, including Princesses Charlotte and Jane. I feel like none of the characters were developed too deeply, but I was alright with that because these are light-hearted books that don’t require too much development. I do hope that in the following books we get to know these characters even better, though!
Holly’s writing is enchanting. It’s easy and light, but still has a certain quality to it that adds depth and pulls readers in. I just can’t put my finger on it exactly (magic, maybe?) No matter what Holly has done to write such charming books, I can’t wait to continue reading!
About the Author: HOLLY WEBB
Holly was born and grew up in southeast London but spent a lot of time on the Suffolk coast. As a child, she had two dogs, a cat, and at one point, nine gerbils (an accident). At about ten, Holly fell in love with stories from Ancient Greek myths, which led to studying university. She worked for five years as a children’s fiction editor before deciding that writing was more fun and easier to do from a sofa. Now living in Reading with her husband, three sons, and two cats, Holly runs a Guide unit. The Rose books stem from a childhood love of historical novels and the wish that animals really could talk.
